Matsushima

2017

●About Matsushima

Matsushima is one of the famous sightseeing areas in Miyagi, as a symbol of Japan surrounded by the ocean. It is known as a beautiful place of islands floating on the ocean, and as such, it is registered as of the three most scenic spots in Japan.

When we speak of Matsushima, we usually think of its famously representative superb view of Japan, and its seafood. However, do you know about fashionable shops like a cafeteria and bakery in present-day Matsushima? As it is now, there are places popular among young girls. We covered the charm of today’s Matsushima, and gave the title “Retro walking in Matsushima “ to our findings.

THE MUSEUM MATSUSHIMA

THE MUSEUM MATSUSHIMA

The old orgel (Dutch word for “musical boxes”) museum in Matsushima was closed due to the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. It was reborn as "The Museum Matsushima" in 2016.

The music boxes displayed at this museum are made in Europe in such countries as Belgium and Germany. The owner who had land in Matsushima built a museum here. The pieces were from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. On March 3, 2011, at the time of the earthquake and tsunami, the music boxes were broken by the shaking caused by the earthquake and water flooded in the hall. That was really terrible damage.

Overcoming such difficulties, the total number of music boxes currently displayed is 63.

SHOKADO

●Osakana Ichiba (Fish market )

There is a market where you can eat and buy fresh local seafood. It has a food court on the second floor. And you can eat delicious food like kakiburger, Haracomeshi, sushi, and much more.

○SHOKADO

This is “an old house cafe” famous for its castella (from the Portuguese word pão de Castella; English = sponge cake). Popular among women (and girls), there are lots of sweets, for example, pudding, anmitsu (traditional Japanese desert) and ice cream. In addition, you can see a very beautiful view of Matsushima‘s sea from the window.

○Zuigan-ji Temple

The temple is a National Treasure of Japan. After completing the repair work of the main hall, we are now able to worship there. It is a recommended spot.
