Sendai Ⅰ Zonta Club

In 1961 the first Zonta Club in Japan was founded. Five years later, a Zonta Club was established in Sendai. At one point, there were two separate Zonta Clubs in Sendai, but in 2006 the two clubs merged, resulting in the present Sendai I Zonta Club.

To commemorate their 50th birthday, Sendai I Zonta Club embarked on an International Zonta voluntary social service project to establish a Golden Z Club (i.e., a club comprising of university students) in Sendai. By sponsoring a club, the members hoped students would become interested in the international community through various social service activities and become dynamic leaders in the future.

In March 2014, three Sendai I Zonta members approached Miyagi Gakuin Women’s University and by October, a special task force (led by Michiko Aihara) was set up to establish a Golden Z Club at the university. In January 2015, Ms. Aihara and other members of Sendai I Zonta Club visited the university and spoke to a group of students who had expressed interest in the new club. By March, 16 students had registered as members of the newly-formed Miyagigakuin Women’s University Golden Z Club. (Formal recognization by International Zonta was made in June, 2015.)

On May 19, 2015 Miyagigakuin Women’s University Golden Z Club received funding from Sendai I Zonta and its club activities commenced in earnest. On November 7, 2015 a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Zonta Club in Sendai was held. On the same day, an attestation ceremony for Miyagigakuin Women’s University Golden Z Club was held at the same venue.
