This project started as a result of the United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction, which was held in March 2015 in Sendai. We collaborated with students of Miyagi University to create a “food map” (http://www.stcb.or.jp/mealnavi/) for foreigners who came from around the world to attend this special meeting. While working on the project, we discovered that many of the eateries of Sendai did not have any menus in English. Since Sendai is aiming to become a more “international” city, we thought that restaurants would need to have English menus. It was at this time we learned of the Golden Zonta activities. So now, we are part of the Miyagi Gakuin Women’s University Golden Z club and are working with restaurants to create English menus.
We would like foreigners coming to Miyagi for work or for travel to enjoy Miyagi and know more about this prefecture. One way to learn more about Miyagi is to know more about its food. This, we believe, is one way to contribute to international understanding.
At the moment we are working with the owner of a chinese restaurant in Nishikicho and making the shop’s menu. There are many people who frequent the shop, and some of them cannot eat certain food due to allergies or religious reasons. We realize that what kind of food a person can eat depends on the physical condition of individuals and on cultural background, so we are noting in detail the ingredients used for each dish. In this way, all visitors will be able to enjoy the food. In addition to the text, we are planning to put pictures of all dishes on the menu so that customers can get a clear image of a dish before ordering.
